When using Printlapse to create 3D printing timelapse videos, large G-code files can take longer to upload and process, especially for complex models.
Here are a few simple ways to reduce G-code file size in Bambu Studio without significantly affecting your rendered result.
1. Increase Resolution
Go to Process → Quality → Precision → Resolution.
The default value is often 0.012 mm. Try increasing it to:
- 0.03 mm – Good balance between detail and file size.
- 0.05 mm – Smaller files, ideal for most decorative models.
A higher value simplifies toolpaths, reducing the number of G-code commands while preserving the overall shape.
2. Enable Arc Fitting
Go to Process → Quality → Precision → Arc fitting.
This option replaces multiple short movements with fewer arc commands, reducing file size for models with curved surfaces.
Only enable this if your G-code renderer supports G2/G3 arc commands.
3. Adjust Layer Height (Optional)
Larger layer heights mean fewer layers and fewer G-code instructions.
For example, increasing the layer height from 0.12 mm to 0.20 mm reduces the total number of layers by approximately 40%.
Keep in mind that this also affects how your model builds up in the timelapse.
4. Disable Supports (Optional)
Go to Process → Support → Enable Support.
If you only want to render the model without support structures, you can disable this option.
This can significantly reduce file size for models that require extensive supports during actual printing.
5. Disable Prime Tower (Optional)
Go to Process → Others → Prime tower.
Multicolor prints often use a prime tower to maintain extrusion quality when switching filaments.
However, if you're only interested in rendering the model itself, the prime tower may be unnecessary and can add extra G-code commands.
Disabling it can help reduce file size, especially for multicolor models.
Recommended Settings
For most models rendered in Printlapse, try starting with:
| Setting | Recommended Value |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 0.03 mm |
| Arc fitting | Enabled (if supported) |
| Layer height | 0.20 mm |
| Supports | Disabled (if not needed in the render) |
| Prime tower | Disabled (if not needed in the render) |
These adjustments can make your G-code files smaller and easier to process while maintaining good visual quality.
Important: If you plan to physically print the model, keep the supports and prime tower settings required for a successful print. Use a separate G-code export for rendering when necessary.
Tip: Always check the sliced preview before exporting to make sure your model still looks the way you want.
